Express Entry – The Fastest Pathway to Canadian Immigration

Express Entry is Canada’s flagship system for selecting skilled workers for permanent residence (PR). It invites talented professionals to contribute to Canada’s economy and settle permanently.

How Express Entry Works

  • Applicants create an online Express Entry profile and enter the candidate pool.
  • Profiles are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which awards points for age, education, work experience, language ability, and more.
  • Canada issues Invitations to Apply (ITA) to top-ranked candidates during periodic draws.

Programs Managed Under Express Entry

  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For applicants with recent Canadian work experience.
  • Federal Skilled Worker (FSW): For skilled professionals with foreign work experience.
  • Federal Skilled Trades (FST): For tradespersons with qualifications in eligible NOC trade occupations.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Check eligibility: Confirm you meet the criteria of CEC, FSW, or FST and can score competitively on the CRS.
  2. Create your profile: Submit details online; you’ll receive a CRS score and enter the pool for up to 12 months.
  3. Improve your score (optional): Update your profile anytime (e.g., higher language scores, added experience, education, or a valid job offer).
  4. Receive an ITA: If invited, you have 90 days to submit your complete PR application with supporting documents.
  5. PR decision: IRCC assesses your application and issues a final decision.

Ways to Boost Your CRS

  • Provincial Nomination (PNP): A nomination can add significant points and move you to the top of the pool.
  • Valid Job Offer (LMIA-backed): Can provide additional CRS points and strengthen your profile.
  • Language & Education: Higher IELTS/CELPIP and ECA-recognized education can increase points.
  • Spousal factors: Your partner’s language, education, and work history may also contribute to the CRS.

Key Notes

  • Draw frequency: IRCC conducts regular Express Entry draws; categories and thresholds can vary.
  • Profile validity: If no ITA is received within 12 months, you can recreate your profile and try again.
  • No extensions on ITA deadline: The 90-day submission window is firm.

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is one of the most popular immigration streams within Canada’s Express Entry system. Those meeting the criteria are selected for permanent settlement.

  • Part of the Express Entry system, which operates on a points-based CRS ranking.
  • Eligibility criteria are comparatively relaxed compared to other developed nations.
